The burner – the heart of our glass workshop
At the gas burner, the glassblower brings the glass to the precise working temperature. The open flame heats it to over 1,000 °C and concentrates the heat exactly where it is needed. Through precise rotational movements and the adjustment of gas and oxygen, rigid glass is transformed into a malleable material, the basis for our mouth-blown glasses "Made in Germany".
Borosilicate glass – lightweight, robust, suitable for everyday use
Our mouth-blown glasses are made from colorless borosilicate glass, a type of glass typically used in laboratories and medicine. It is exceptionally heat-resistant, has low thermal expansion, and is less susceptible to temperature fluctuations than conventional crystal or soda-lime glass.
This ensures that the glasses remain stable, clear, and dishwasher-safe.
Tools in the glassblower's workshop
The handcrafted production of our mouth-blown borosilicate glass glasses requires no machinery, but rather a few specialized tools.
- The coal lifter is used to open and shape the hot chalice; the coal plate, for example, aligns the foot.
- The blowing hose is used for larger goblets to ensure the glass is inflated evenly.
- A caliper helps to keep the height and diameter of a series within the same range.
- Finally, a stamp imprints the logo into the glass as a visible mark of origin. Safety goggles protect the eyes from bright flame light.
The tempering oven – relaxes the glass
Once a glass piece has been shaped at the burner, it goes into the tempering oven. There, the borosilicate glass is heated again to approximately 560 °C – in this temperature range, any stresses that have built up in the material can be released.
The kiln then cools the glass slowly and in a controlled manner. This ensures an even temperature distribution, reduces internal stresses, and makes the glass significantly less susceptible to impacts and temperature fluctuations. Only after this step is mouth-blown borosilicate glass truly suitable for everyday use: stable, low-stress, and dishwasher-safe.
